UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - For the first time in her collegiate career, Penn State field hockey sophomore Taylor Herold (Fredericksburg, Va.) has been named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday. This is Herold's second weekly honor as a Nittany Lion, as she was named the Co-Freshman of the Week on Oct. 4 in 2011. Penn State has had an athlete receive Big Ten honors for three consecutive weeks now, and has had a total of six this season.
A huge force on Penn State's offense, Herold scored both game-winning goals against Bucknell and then No. 21 Michigan State this past week. Playing as both a forward and a midfielder, she notched a six-point week on three goals, recording the second multi-goal game of her career against the Spartans. The Lions' win over Michigan State secured the squad as the outright Big Ten Conference Champions.
Herold currently sits at 15 points on the season with seven goals and one assist. As a Lion, the sophomore holds 17 goals and five assists for 39 career points and five game-winning goals.
Herold and the rest of the No. 4 Nittany Lions hit the road to head to Iowa City, Iowa for the 2012 Big Ten Tournament. As the No. 1 seed, Penn State will begin competition in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 2 at 2:30 p.m. against the winner of the Iowa-Michigan State contest. The first round will begin on Thursday, Nov. 1 at noon.
The Big Ten Network will provide coverage of the entire tournament, with the quarterfinals streamed live on the Big Ten Digital Network. The semifinals and the championship game (Nov. 4) will be available both on BTN and BTN2Go.
