Henderson and McCluskey Lead Penn State on Opening Day of Tribe Invitational

Williamsburg, Va. - Sarah Henderson and Devan McCluskey won their opening singles matches in the Tribe Invitational hosted by William & Mary on Friday.

Playing in her only match of the day, Sarah Henderson was victorious, defeating Kia Batiste of Norfolk State, 6-1, 6-2. The senior will move on to the second round to face Megan Douglass of James Madison tomorrow.

Freshman Devan McCluskey, also won her first round singles match, besting Leeza Nemchinov of William & Mary 6-3, 6-4. After capturing her third singles win of the fall, McCluskey is set to face Sylvia Li of Harvard in the second round.

Junior Carmen Sandor was knocked out of the singles draw by Maria Belen Ludueña of Kansas, losing 6-1, 6-2. Sandor will face Dana Oppinger of Marshall in the back draw tomorrow.

Freshman Katherine Whiteaway was ousted in her singles match, losing 6-3, 7-5, to the host school's Anik Cepeda. She will look to the consolations where she will face Natalie Blosser of Harvard.

Freshman Jacqueline Zuhse played Harvard's Hannah Morrill, but wasn't able to come away with a win, losing 6-2, 6-3. Zuhse will be back in action Friday when she takes on Daria Yakauleva of VCU in the back draw.

In doubles action, Sandor and Zuhse were eliminated by Harvard's Sylvia Li and Amanda Lin, 8-3. In the consolations on Friday, they will face Daria Yakaleva and Michelle Nguyen of James Madison.

McCluskey and Whiteaway were also in doubles action on Friday. They faced Anik Cepeda and Leeza Nemchinov in a losing effort, bowing out 8-2. They face Ensal Olguin and Ivana Vukovic of Old Dominion in the back draw on Friday.

Action starts back up tomorrow with two rounds of doubles at 9 a.m. followed by a round of singles at noon.
