Nov. 12, 2012

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Penn State fencers traveled to Virginia Beach to compete in the four day North American Cup Tournament that was held this weekend. The Nittany Lions saw some very strong finishes, and had a total of eight top 10 finishes.

Starting off the competition for the Lions on Friday was the team of Nobuo Bravo, Jeremy Goldstein, David Willette, and David Gomez-Tanamachi who competed in the men's foil senior team competition. The team placed first out of eight teams from all over the country.

The men's saber senior team competitors also clinched a first place finish. This team was represented by Penn State captain Adrian Bak, Alex Schneller, Kaito Streets, and Shaul Gordon.

The Nittany Lions had impressive individual performances as well this weekend. Senior Olympian Miles Chamley-Watson finished second in the Division 1 men's foil competition, and teammate David Willette finished right behind him in third place. David Gomez-Tanamachi and Jeremy Goldstein finished in seventh and thirteenth place, respectively.

Penn State freshmen proved to be a strong force in the junior competitions. In men's saber Kaito Streets finished first out of 136 fencers, and Shaul Gordon finished tied for third place. Nobuo Bravo finished second in junior men's foil competition. Sophomore Maxwell Kleeman placed fourteenth in the junior men's epee competition.

Penn State women fencers competed in the tournament as well, but didn't find as much success as their male teammates. Freshman Clarisse Luminet placed 27th in the Division 1 women's foil competition. Nicole Glon and Jessica Russo placed 33rd and 38th in the Division 1 women's saber competition, respectively. Elizabeth Rapp finished 34th in junior women's saber.

The Nittany Lions will return to action Dec. 1 when they travel to Vassar, N.Y. to begin their season of NCAA competition against Princeton, Harvard, Sacred Heart, and NYU.
