UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Five members of the Penn State field hockey team have received Division I All-Region honors, the National Field Hockey Coaches Association office announced Thursday. Senior Kelsey Amy (Sweet Valley, Pa.), sophomore Laura Gebhart (Mount Joy, Pa.) and junior Brittany Grzywacz (Collegeville, Pa.) were named to the All-Mideast Region First Team, and junior Abby Fuhrman (Bainbridge, Pa.) and junior Ashtin Klingler (Selinsgrove, Pa.) were named to the All-Mideast Region Second Team.
Coming off of a tremendous season, Amy was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and earned All-Big Ten First Team honors. After her performance at the Big Ten Tournament, the forward was named the Tournament MVP for the second consecutive year. Helping her squad to a Conference Title, as well as the second consecutive Big Ten Tournament Championship, Amy ends her senior campaign with 24 goals and 12 assists for 60 points. In her career as a Lion, the All-American has recorded 76 goals and 24 assists for 176 points with 16 game-winning goals, five of which were scored in the 2012 season. Amy currently sits at third in all-time career goals, third in all-time career points, 10th in all-time goals in a single season and eighth in all-time points in a single season in program history.
Gebhart has served as a game-changer in the midfield, adding grit to the offense and constantly forcing turnovers. The sophomore earned Big Ten recognition this season, being named to the All-Big Ten First Team, as well as to the All-Tournament Team. She ends the year with six goals and 12 assists for 24 points.
Grzywacz had her breakout season, becoming one of the most versatile players on the squad. The junior was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year and named to the All-Big Ten First Team after leading the conference in defensive saves with six. Playing as a midfielder and at back, Grzywacz recorded 12 goals and two assists for 26 points this season, recording her 55th career point along the way.
Leading Penn State's defensive effort, Fuhrman served as a resilient, steadfast force in the backfield. The junior helped her squad to only allowing 151 shots on goal and 34 goals against. In comparison, the Lions recorded 297 shots on goal with 87 goals this year. Fuhrman's smart defensive style led to six team shutouts, including the 2-0 victory over Michigan to win the Big Ten Tournament Championship.
Klingler stepped up for the Lions this season, recording four game-winning goals against Lafayette, Indiana, Michigan and Iowa in the regular season. The junior played her best season to date, racking up 11 goals and two assists for 24 points. One of the most tenacious players on the team, Klingler constantly fought and won battles in the midfield to create scoring opportunities. The forward gained Big Ten recognition this season, being named to the All-Big Ten Second Team.
