BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Penn State men's swimming and diving team completed its second day of competition at Indiana on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Hoosiers (3-2) by just four points with a final score of 178.50-174.50. The Nittany Lions (2-2) also fell to Virginia (4-0) with a close mark of 198-155. Proving to be a tight race, Indiana topped the Cavaliers by one single point with a score of 177-176.
Penn State recorded a victory in the opening event for the fourth consecutive week, with sophomore Nate Savoy (Reading, Pa.), junior James Wilson (Nottingham, Pa.), junior Sean Grier (Hummelstown, Pa.) and freshman Shane Ryan (Havertown, Pa.) dominating the 200 medley relay. The squad came in first place with a time of 1:28.30.
Leading the Lions with two individual wins, Grier claimed the 100 back with a time of 48.36 seconds, besting Indiana's Eric Ress by .29 seconds. The junior went on to win the 100 fly, as well, clocking in at 48.30 seconds to beat a Virginia swimmer by 1.67 seconds. Grier was followed in the 100 back by Savoy in third place (48.95) and followed by junior Andrew Sideras (Philadelphia) in the 100 fly in fourth place (50.13).
Winning the 50 free for the second consecutive week, Ryan swam a time of 20.65 seconds, leading junior John Hauser (Pottstown, Pa.) in second place with a time of 20.74 seconds. Hauser tied Indiana's Daniel Kanorr for second, while Sideras and junior Shane Austin (Kennett Square, Pa.) followed in fourth (20.75) and fifth (20.79), respectively. Additionally, Hauser went on to record a season high in the 200 free, earning third place with a time of 1:39.24.
Closing out the competition, Penn State claimed victory in the 400 free relay. The squad of Hauser, Austin, Sideras and Ryan swam a collective time of 2:58.95 to defeat its opposition by 2.10 seconds.
The Lions return to action on Friday, Nov. 30 when the team heads to Athens, Ga. for the annual Georgia Invitational. Facing some of the top swimmers in the nation, Penn State will compete from Nov.30-Dec. 2 in one of the most challenging weekends of the season.
