MADISON, Wisc./ORLANDO, Fla. - Penn State men's tennis freshman Matt Barry(Lido Beach, N.Y.) won his consolation bracket semifinal and final matches at the Big Ten Indoor Tournament on Sunday. Barry finished the tournament with four wins to lead the Nittany Lions. Tomas Hanzlik won a consolation match at the USTA Clay Court Invitational. The Nittany Lions earned a total of seven singles and two doubles wins between the tournaments this weekend.
After falling in Friday's first round match at the Big Ten Indoor Tournament, Matt Barry closed out the weekend with four straight wins. He reached Sunday's consolation final after topping Wisconsin's Jakhongir Jalalov 6-2, 4-6, 12-10 in the semifinal. In the final, Barry defeated Michigan State's Christian Roehmer 6-1, 6-2. Barry's other consolation wins over the weekend came against Michigan State's Doug Zade(4-6, 6-1, 10-8) and Tyler Richmond(6-1, 6-1). Throughout the fall, Barry has earned 12 wins.
Barry and C.J. Griffin(Portland, Mich.) also picked up a doubles win at the tournament. On Friday, in the Round of 32, they defeated Illinois' Ross Guignon and Bruno Abdelnour 8-5. Another doubles pair, Guanhua Chen(DaLian, China) and Chris Young(Melbourne, Australia) fell in Saturday's doubles consolation final against Illinois, but reached there with an 8-4 win in the consolation semifinals over Michigan State's Doug Zade and Will Davis.
Ramy Labna(Doha, Qatar) combined with Wisconsin's Alex Kokorev, due to odd numbers. The duo won two matches on Friday. In the first round, they defeated Indiana's Daniel Bednarczyk and Elliot Yee 8-4. They followed that up with a round of 16 victory over Iowa's Dominic Patrick and Chase Tomlins 8-6.
Sophomore Tomas Hanzlik(Prague, Czech Republic) won his Gold Draw Consolation match on Sunday. He faced Florida's Gordon Watson and came out on top in a 6-2, 2-6, 10-1 match.
Bryan Welnetz(Laredo, Texas) matched up against USTA's Martin Redlicki in his Gold Draw consolation match, but fell 7-5, 6-4. Welnetz picked up a consolation win on Saturday over Kentucky's Panav Jha 6-2, 6-3.
Junior Russell Bader(Austin, Texas) fell 6-1, 4-6, 10-6 in his Garnet Draw Consolation match to USTA's George Goldhoff. Bader reached the Round of 16 in the draw with his Friday Round of 32 win over Tulsa's Michael Kirby 6-3, 6-3. In the Round of 16, he lost a tough 6-2, 2-6, 7-5 battle to Florida State's Cristian Gonzalez Mendez.
In his Spear Draw Consolation match, freshman Roman Trkulja(Toronto, Canada) dropped a 7-5, 6-1 result to Florida's Thomas Proisy. After receiving a Round of 32 bye on Friday, Trkulja fell 3-6, 6-4, 6-0 in the Round of 16 to Florida State's Joao Gauer.
