UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's hockey team erased a 2-0 deficit to tie the game late in the second period, but the Nittany Lions fell to Neumann, 3-2, in overtime at Greenberg Ice Pavilion Tuesday night. With the loss, Penn State dropped to 8-12-0, while Neumann improved to 10-4-2.
Chris Bournazos gave the Knights a 1-0 lead 20 seconds into the game and D'Lane Sather doubled the advantage at 4:45 of the second.
While on the power play, freshman forward Casey Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska) tallied his 10th goal of the season at 9:46 before David Glen's (For Saskatchewan, Alta.) 10th marker tied the game with 5:06 left in the frame. After a scoreless third, Neumann's Jon Low netted the game-winner with 53 seconds remaining in the extra stanza.
Penn State, which went 1-for-6 with the man advantage, outshot the Knights by a 46-17 margin. Sophomore netminder PJ Musico (Orange, Calif.) made 14 saves while Neumann goaltender Ben Curley turned aside 44 shots. The Knights were held scoreless on both of their power-play chances.
Bournazos opened the scoring when he corralled Jordan Zalba's pass and scored from the bottom of the left circle.
With 15:15 left in the second, Sather skated the Knights to a 2-0 advantage. Aaron Keaney sent the puck to Sather at the hash marks, where he sent a shot that deflected off a defenseman's skates and into the net.
Bailey made it a 2-1 game 5:01 later. Defenseman Mark Yanis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) passed the puck along the blue line to Peter Sweetland (Newtown, Pa.), who sent a quick diagonal pass to Bailey in the left circle. The Anchorage, Alaska, native then rifled a one-timer to the back of the net.
At 14:54 of the frame, Glen evened the score after Kenny Brooks' (Las Vegas, Nev.) great individual effort. Junior Justin Kirchhevel (Brookings, S.D.), who returned to the lineup for the first time since an exhibition game against Arizona State Nov. 30, passed to Brooks, who took a shot from the left circle before collecting his own rebound. The Las Vegas, Nev., native then powered around the net before finding Glen outside the crease for the goal.
In overtime, Low collected a pass from Casey Rogers and had his first attempt stopped before scoring on the rebound to account for the 3-2 final.
The Nittany Lions will return to action Saturday, Jan. 19 when they travel to the Wells Fargo Center to play in the Philadelphia College Hockey Faceoff against Vermont. Opening faceoff is set at 8 p.m.
