Modglin Honored as Big Ten Women's Swimmer of the Week

Jan. 15, 2013

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; January 15, 2013 -- After posting her ninth NCAA B Cut time last weekend in a tri-meet at Arkansas and against Missouri State, senior Amy Modglin (Fort Myers, Fla.) was named the Big Ten Women's Swimmer of the Week. It is the fifth honor of her career and marks the first time this season that a Penn State women's swimmer has collected the weekly honor from the conference office.

Even through a tough period of training for the swimming and diving program the senior was able to grab a pair of wins and finish runner-up in a third event in the tri-meet at Arkansas. Modglin came away with the 400 IM and 200 backstroke titles, wining the events in 4:19.36 and 1:56.98, respectively. The senior also led a caravan of PSU swimmers that finished 2-3-4 in the 200 freestyle, touching in 1:49.58 to finish second.

Her time in the 200 backstroke was an NCAA B Cut qualifying time and gives her five such marks in the event. She also has a pair of NCAA provisional marks in the 200 IM and 400 IM. Modglin ranks 16th in the NCAA in the 200 backstroke and owns the team's top four times in the event in 2012-13. Modglin ranks fourth on the team in the 100 backstroke, 200 and 400 IM and is fifth on the team in the 200 freestyle.

Modglin has captured at least one swimmer of the week honor during each of her four seasons on campus, earning the distinction twice during her sophomore campaign. She was the last Nittany Lion to earn Big Ten swimmer of the week, as well, claiming the award on Oct. 25, 2011 after a standout effort in the season opener vs. West Virginia.

Penn State returns to Happy Valley for a pair of home meets over the next two weeks, beginning with a dual meet vs. Navy on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 11 a.m. before hosting senior day on Saturday, Feb. 2 in a dual meet with Towson at 1 p.m.
