Stow, Ohio - Women's Tennis knocked off Akron 5-2 on the road Sunday giving the Nittany Lions their first-ever win against the Zips.
Just as they did against Middle Tennessee the day before, Penn State won the doubles point to begin the match. Carmen Sandor and Sarah Henderson won their match for the second straight day, besting Madison Cohen and Andrea Duva 8-5.
The doubles point came down to the No. 2 doubles match after Petra Januskova and Chelsea Utting lost in the No. 1 doubles match-up 8-6 to Prang Pantusart and Angelina Jogasuria. Katherine Whiteaway and Jacqueline Zuhse took the lead and never looked back winning their match and the doubles point 8-5.
In the singles competition the Nittany Lions took four of the six matches. Januskova and Utting both came back strong in the singles competition capturing the first two singles victories for Penn State on the day. Januskova defeated Olga Shkundina in the No. 1 spot 6-1, 6-2 while Utting bested Prang Pantusart in the No. 2 match-up 6-2, 6-1.
After clinching the doubles point with Whiteaway earlier in the day Zuhse continued her roll and clinched the match point for the Lions when she topped Madison Cohen in the No. 6 singles match 6-1, 6-2. The big win came in her first singles match at a dual match.
Sandor was also victorious in her singles match. After winning the first set, she lost the tie-breaker in the second before winning the super-breaker to give the Nittany Lions their fifth and final point.
Devan McCluskey lost her singles match to Angelina Jogasuria 6-3, 6-2. Whiteaway was bested in her singles match to Ksenia Berestetska 6-0, 6-1.
With the win the Nittany Lions are now 2-0 to start the season, their best start since 2010. The Nittany Lions return home where they'll face Temple in their home opener next Saturday.
