UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Three members of the Penn State Nittany Lion wrestling team competed at the Messiah Open on Saturday, with each earning a place at the event. Red-shirt freshman Scott Syrek (Chester Springs, Pa.) won the 197-pound title to lead the Nittany Lions.
Syrek went 4-0 at 197 with a pin to claim his crown. Red-shirt freshman Michael Waters (Advance, N.C.) took second at 141, going 2-1 with a pin. Red-shirt freshman David Owens (Derry, N.H.) placed fifth at 149, going 5-2 with three pins.
Penn State now hits the road for most of February, beginning with a Feb. 1 date at Iowa. The Nittany Lions and Hawkeyes tangle at 9 p.m. (Eastern) on Friday in a dual that airs live on the Big Ten Network. Penn State's only remaining dual meet is Sunday, Feb. 17, when Rider visits Rec Hall. The dual is sold out but a limited number of SRO tickets may be available.
