HERSHEY, Pa. - Freshmen Kenny Brooks (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Mark Yanis (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) recorded a goal and two assists each as the Penn State men's hockey team skated to a 6-1 victory against Ohio in an exhibition matchup at the GIANT Center in Hershey, Pa., Friday night. Penn State, which played in front of 6,107 fans, competed in front of at least 5,000 spectators for the eighth time this season.
Freshman Casey Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska) added two goals, while senior Michael Longo (Allison Park, Pa.) and freshman David Glen (Fort Saskatchewan, Alta.) also scored. Freshman defenseman Connor Varley (Lansdale, Pa.) notched a two-point game with a pair of assists, and sophomore netminder PJ Musico (Orange, Calif.) turned aside 13 shots.
In the first period, the Bobcats skated to a 1-0 advantage before Bailey, who tallied on the power play, and Glen put the Lions ahead, 2-1, after the opening frame. The Nittany Lions tallied four times in the second period, all in a 3:46 span, to put the game out of reach.
Penn State out shout the Bobcats by a 37-14 margin and went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Ohio finished 0-for-3 with the man advantage. Ohio goaltender Matt Michno allowed six goals on 27 shots before Aaron Alkema made 10 saves in relief.
The teams will face off again Saturday, Feb. 2 at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion in University Park, Pa. Opening faceoff is set at 7:30 p.m.
In the first period, Ohio grabbed a 1-0 lead with Nick Rostek's marker at 6:09 after redirecting Paul Sergi's blue line shot in front of the cage.
While on the power play, Bailey tied the game with 7:18 left in the period. Junior Taylor Holstrom (Yorba Linda, Calif.) sent a pass to Yanis at the blue line, where he found Bailey in the left circle. The Anchorage, Alaska, native one-timed a slap shot low past Michno.
Glen gave the Nittany Lions a 2-1 lead 1:50 later. Brooks sent the puck behind the net to Glen, whose wraparound attempt found daylight between Michno's arm and chest.
The Lions added four goals in the second stanza as they skated to the 6-1 advantage. Brooks opened the scoring with 10:45 remaining when he collected Yanis' pass in the slot, moved to his right and beat Michno high. Junior Justin Kirchhevel (Brookings, S.D.) also collected an assist on the play.
Bailey added his second of the game 59 seconds later. The freshman stole the puck from an Ohio defenseman, moved into the offensive zone and sent a shot to the back of the net.
With 8:27 remaining in the frame, Longo's wrister made it a 5-1 contest. Varley sent a pass to Carlisle-native Eric Steinour (Carlisle, Pa.), who moved the puck to Longo. The Allison Park, Pa., native skated to the top of the left circle before scoring.
Yanis added his marker at 13:01 of the frame. Brooks sent a pass to Yanis at the left point, where his shot beat Michno, who was then pulled in favor of Alekma.
A scoreless third period followed as Penn State garnered the 6-1 victory.
