Penn State Women's Fencing Dominates Foil Event at Duke

DURHAM, N.C. - The Penn State women's fencing team finished their day at Duke on Sunday with a 2-3 record. Despite the disappointing finish, the Nittany Lions won the foil cup with 28 wins.

The fifth ranked women started the day off with a dual against No. 1 Notre Dame, and fell to the Fighting Irish by a score of 20-7. The Nittany Lion saber team was the only squad able to pick up a win against Notre Dame, and out fenced their opponents 5-4. The first ranked Fighting Irish finished the day undefeated.

The Nittany Lions then moved onto the second dual of the day in which they defeated UNC by a score of 18-9. The foil team's outstanding performance led them to a 9-0 victory. The epee team also picked up a win against the Tar Heels.

Next, Penn State took on No. 7 Northwestern, and dropped the match 17-10. The foil team continued their success with a 5-4 record, and was the only squad to win against the Wildcats.

The Nittany Lions picked up their second win of the day against Wayne State, and all three squads won the dual with a 6-3 record. Penn State then dropped their final dual to host Duke, by a score of 16-11. Once again, the foil team was the only team to come out on top against the Blue Devils.

The foil team finished the day 4-1, and was Penn State's most successful squad. Freshman Clarisse Luminet had a solid 7-2 performance, and teammate Alina Antokhina had a 9-4 finish.

Next up for the Nittany Lions is their final NCAA meet before Regionals. The team will travel to Philadelphia to take on Duke, St. Johns, Princeton, and UPenn on Saturday February 23.
