CAA Names Sturgis as Player of the Week

Feb. 18, 2013

RICHMOND, Va. - Penn State men's lacrosse attackman Shane Sturgis (Downingtown, Pa.) was named Colonial Athletic Association Men's Lacrosse Player of the Week on Monday afternoon. Sturgis scored four goals on eight shots to lead Penn State past No. 9 Denver, 15-12, on Sunday.

For Sturgis, the honor is his third weekly conference award. He was twice named CAA Rookie of the Week in 2011 on Mar. 14 and Apr. 11 en route to a All-CAA Rookie Team laurel.

Sturgis impressed on a national stage keying an attack that defeated No. 9 Denver in Jacksonville, Fla. Sturgis took just eight shots and scored four times, including a highlight-reel inside roll in the first quarter. This season, Sturgis has eight goals on two games for the Nittany Lions who are 2-0 for the first time since 2002. Additionally, Penn State was voted eighth by the USILA coaches, matching the highest ranking ever (last on Apr. 1, 1996).

Sturgis is on an eight-game point streak dating back to Mar. 31, 2012. During that span, Sturgis has scored 22 goals with six assists for a total of 28 points. The last Nittany Lion to earn CAA Player of the Week honors was Jack Forster (Jenkintown, Pa.) on Apr. 9, 2012.

Penn State welcomes No. 3 Notre Dame to Happy Valley for a much anticipated battle with the Fighting Irish. UND won at No. 4 Duke this past weekend. Penn State and Notre Dame played a tense 4-3 overtime game last year in which PSU prevailed.
