LINCOLN, NEB., FEB. 9, 2013 - Penn State (8-15; 0-11 Big Ten) suffered another tough shooting night, falling 67-53 to Nebraska (12-12; 3-8 Big Ten) on Saturday night in Lincoln, Neb.
D.J. Newbill (Philadelphia, Pa.) led Penn State with 17 points and Jermaine Marshall (Etters, Pa.) added 16 off the bench. Ross Travis (Chaska, Minn.) tied a career high with 13 rebounds, the fifth double-digit rebounding game of the year for the Big Ten's fifth leading rebounder. Alan Wisniewski (Sterling Heights, Mich.) came off the bench to post career highs of six points and eight rebounds in a career most 17 minutes in the first significant action of the walk-on, Industrial Engineering major's career.
Nebraska was led by 16 points from Dylan Talley and 14 from Brandon Ubel.
Penn State shot 29 percent, 20 percent in the first half, and was 2-of-10 from three. The Lions used a 23-of-32 performance at the foul line to stay in the game. Nebraska shot 32 percent and 5-of-18 from three, but hit 32-of-41 from the foul line to pull away.
Nebraska extended a 33-26 halftime lead to 41-26 early in the second half with an 8-0 run. The Huskers built their lead to as many as 18 points midway through the half as Penn State struggled to make shots. The Lions finally got their leading scorers Newbill and Marshall unleashed midway through the half. The pair scored 23 of their combined 33 points in the second period after an 0-of-13 start from the field.
Penn State held an early 17-13 lead after nine straight points at the foul line and a 13-3 run, but went over 11 minutes without a field goal and saw Nebraska string together an 18-4 run to take a 29-19 lead with under four minutes to play in the first half.
Penn State did most of its scoring in the half at the foul line hitting 16-of-21 at the charity stripe to compensate for 20 percent shooting and 0-of-3 from the three-point arc in the half. Newbill led the Lions with six first half points. Seven Lions scored in the half including walk-on Alan Wisniewski who logged his first career points with a nice hook shot and got two more at the foul line while playing the first significant minutes of his career.
Nebraska shot 34 percent in the half and 3-of-10 from three to take a 33-26 edge at the half. The Huskers built as much as a 12-point lead. Sasa Borovnjak's short jumper with just under two minutes to play ended the Lions field goal drought and started a 5-0 Penn State run to end the half as the Lions went to the break trailing by seven.
Penn State will return to the Jordan Center on Thursday for a 9 p.m. tip vs. Iowa. That game will be televised by ESPNU.
