NCAA Zone Diving Championships Conclude Divers Season

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.-- The NCAA Zone A Diving Championships concluded today on the campus of Virginia Tech and the Nittany Lions watched as two competitors finished their seasons inside the Christiansburg Aquatic Center. Megan Springsteen (Owego, N.Y.) competed on the 1-meter board, while T.J. Schenkel (Richboro, Pa.) finished up his stay on the 3-meter board.

Springsteen ended her stay at the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships with a 42nd place finish on the 1-meter board with an overall score of 180.35.

The junior capped off her first appearance at the NCAA Zone Diving Championships after qualifying on the 1-meter board when she compiled a score of 268.42 vs. Villanova on Nov. 11, 2012 to win the event. The junior also won the 1-meter event against Navy on Jan. 26, 2013 with a mark of 243.82 and later placed second on the board vs. Towson with a score of 251.37 on Feb. 2. Springsteen owned the team's top score on the 3-meter board at 264.00, while ranking second on the 1-meter board with a season-high tally of 268.42.

Schenkel finished up his season on the men's 3-meter board and capped his NCAA Zone A Diving Championships experience with a six-dive score of 199.45 to finish 42nd in the prelims of the event.

Schenkel was the top scorer on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards, along with a team-best showing of 212.60 on the platform this season for the Blue and White. His top tally on the 1-meter was 301.05 vs. Villanova on Nov. 10, 2012, which was the same afternoon he boasted his top 3-meter score of 332.92. He cracked the 300-point mark twice on the 3-meter board and once on the 1-meter.

The day two automatic qualifying marks went to Ryan Hawkins from Virginia Tech on the men's side and Michaela Butler from the University of Massachusetts on the women's side.

Penn State will next be in action at the NCAA Championships in Indianapolis, Ind. The women's portion of the championships will run from March 21-23, while the men will compete from March 28-30.
