SAN ANTONIO, TX - The Penn State men's and women's fencing team currently sits in third place after day three of the 2013 NCAA National Championships. The Nittany Lions have 138 team points after the first three rounds of women's events. Princeton leads the team standings with 146 points, and Notre Dame is in second place with 139 points.
Penn State captain Jessica Russo (Wayne, N.J.) finished the day in third place in the women's saber competition. Russo won 12 of her 15 bouts with a +20 indicator. This is Russo's first trip to Nationals, and she will look to claim her first All-America status tomorrow. Junior Nicole Glon finished the first three rounds in sixth place after defeating 10 of her 15 opponents with a +16 indicator. Glon will look to improve on her ninth place finish at last year's Nationals.
2010 National Champion and three-time All-American Margherita Guzzi Vincenti (Milan, Italy) was Penn State's lone representative in women's epee. The senior finished the day in second place after winning 11 of her 15 bouts. Princeton's Susannah Scanlan is currently in first place after defeating 13 of her 15 opponents. Guzzi Vincenti will look to win her second championship and claim her fourth All-America status in the final day of competition tomorrow.
Freshman Clarisse Luminet (Lyon, France) finished the day in 11th place in women's foil after winning eight of her 15 bouts with a -3 indicator. Sophomore Alina Antokhina (Moscow, Russia) finished in 21st after defeating three of her 15 opponents. Last year Antokhina finished in third place at Nationals, and earned an All-America status.
The 2013 NCAA Championships will conclude tomorrow. Women's rounds four and five will be completed tomorrow morning. The top four in each event will move on to the medal rounds, which will begin at 1:30 p.m. Starting at 2:45 p.m. ESPN3 will be airing the NCAA Fencing Championships presented by Northwestern Mutual.
