UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa., March 26, 2013- The Penn State women's golf team wrapped up its first tournament of the spring with a 17th place finish at the Briar's Creek Invitational. The Nittany Lions improved their score each round as they finished up with a total score of 908 (329, 314, 308).
On Monday facing strong winds and gusts up to 40 mph, the teams completed a full first round and part of round two before play was suspended in the evening. Round two continued Tuesday morning followed by a complete third round.
Coach St. Pierre was quoted as saying "We were disappointed with our start. We had some good things happen and that will be our focus going into the Pinehurst Challenge. We are still making our way back."
Penn State was led by juniors Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.), Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.), and sophomore Elyse Archambault (St.-Jean-sur-Rich, Quebec). Vosters finished the tournament with a third round 72, which was the lowest round out of the five Nittany Lion starters. Vosters ended the tournament at 17 strokes over par-72 totaling 233 (79, 82, 72) strokes, and earned a tie for 32nd. Archambault finished the tournament 22 strokes over par-72 for a total of 238 (82, 76, 80). Ceresko finished one stroke behind Archambault with 239 (82, 76, 81) strokes.
Notre Dame swept both the team and individual portions of the tournament finishing with a total of 906 shots, eight better than second place Maryland. Notre Dame's Ashley Armstrong won the individual portion as she finished at one shot over par-72, finishing three shots better than Laura Wearn from Furman.
Penn State is back in action on Monday, April 1 when the Nittany Lions head to North Carolina for the two-day Pinehurst Challenge.
