Penn State in Second after Day One of Rutherford Intercollegiate

Day One Results

The Penn State men's golf team is in second place at the Rutherford Intercollegiate after 36 holes of play, shooting a 598 (304-294) at the Blue Course Saturday, April 20.

Freshman JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.), who is playing as an individual, earned the first place spot on the leader board making par on the day with his 142 tally. Senior Anthony DeGol (Hollidaysburg, Pa.) shot a 74 and 71 in rounds one and two, respectively, to total a 145 and earn him the overall third place ranking. DeGol leads the pack of Penn State's starting lineup.

Sophomore Xander McDonald-Smith (Rockaway Park, N.Y.) posted a 148 after 36 holes and currently sits tied-for-7th. Freshman Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.) is tied-for-21st, marking a 151 (77-74).

Senior Jay Woodward (Bridgeport, W. Va.) shot a 155 on the day and is tied-for-43rd. Sophomore Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) tallied a 77 in round one, then withdrew from round two due to injury.

Joining Dornes in individual play at the Rutherford Intercollegiate is 4 remaining Lions. Junior Shane Stewart (Dublin, Ohio) is tied-for-9th overall with his 7-over-par 149. Freshman Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) and sophomore Ryan Worthy (Chester Springs, Pa.) share the 43rd ranking with Woodward, shooting a matching 155 score. Rounding out all of the Penn State roster on the day was senior Matthew Porter (Cortland, N.Y.) who posted a total of 157 (77-80).

The University of Maryland will enter the final round of play nine strokes ahead of Penn State with a 589 total. Maryland's Sean Bosdosh will look to edge Dornes during the last 18 holes as he is currently two strokes behind in second place.

Pending weather conditions, concluding tee times are slated to begin at 7:30 a.m. Sunday, April 21.
