MADISON, Wis. - The No. 33 Nittany Lions (13-4, 3-4) defeated the Wisconsin Badgers (4-14, 2-5) on the road Sunday afternoon, 7-0, for their second shutout of the season.
Penn State started quick and never looked back winning both completed matches in the doubles play before sweeping the singles competition. The nation's 75th ranked duo, Petra Januskova and Chelsea Utting, knocked off Hanna Berner and Lauren Chypyha, 8-4, to put the Nittany Lions ahead 1-0 early on in doubles.
Carmen Sandor and Devan McCluskey clinched the doubles point for Penn State when they defeated Wisconsin's No. 2 duo of Katie Hoch and Anastasia Tripolskaya, 8-4. In the No. 3 doubles match Marie-Frederique Bedard and Jacqueline Zuhse led 7-5 when the match was ended after Penn State clinched the point.
Bedard put the Nittany Lions ahead 2-0 winning her singles match against Helen Rabot 6-3, 6-1. Zuhse was the next to finish, winning 6-4, 6-3 over Lauren Burich.
Penn State clinched the victory when McCluskey bested Tripolskay 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 3 spot. Sandor knocked off Hoch 6-3, 6-2 quickly after to put Penn State up 5-0 in the match. In the No. 2 match Utting defeated Chypyha 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) for the Nittany Lions fifth singles win in straight sets on the day.
The last match to finish was the No. 1 match between No. 57 Januskova and Berner. After losing the first set in the tiebreaker, Januskova won the second before winning the super breaker and ultimately the match. The 6-7 (4-7), 6-4, 10-7 victory gave the Nittany Lions their seventh and final point of the match.
The win was Penn State's fifth all-time against the Badgers who hold the series lead 19-5. Penn State has now one the past two meetings between the teams having won last year's match 4-3.
Penn State will return home next week to square off against No. 14 Northwestern on Saturday and No. 54 Illinois on Sunday at Sarni Tennis Center. Both matches are set to begin at 10 a.m.
