UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Five members of the eighth-ranked Penn State women's lacrosse team have been honored with All-American Lacrosse Conference recognition, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.
Senior defender Katie Guy (Whitby, Ont.), sophomore midfielder Kelly Lechner (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore attacker Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) earned All-ALC First Team recognition, while junior attacker Mackenzie Cyr (Westminster, Md.) and freshman midfielder Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.) were named to the league's second team. The Nittany Lions, who have had a total of 52 All-ALC performers since the league's inception in 2002, tied Northwestern for the second-most all-conference honorees.
A stalwart for the Nittany Lion defense, Guy ranks second in the conference with 30 caused turnovers and is third in the league with 38 ground balls. In 2013, the first-time All-ALC honoree has set career highs in ground balls and caused turnovers, while adding 28 draw controls and three points (1g, 2a). The defender also earned her first career ALC Defensive Player of the Week honor this season.
A Silver Spring, Md., native, Lechner has enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign. The midfielder leads the team in draw controls (43) and ranks second in goals (33), third in points (40) and caused turnovers (15) and fourth in ground balls (20). The sophomore, along with Guy and Mosketti, is one of five Nittany Lions with at least 10 draw controls, caused turnovers and ground balls and netted a career-high five goals in a 15-14 ALC victory against Johns Hopkins. Lechner also earned WomensLax.com Player of the Week and ALC Offensive Player of the Week recognition March 5.
An All-ALC Second Team member in 2012, McCormick has led a Nittany Lion attack that ranks 13th in the nation in scoring offense. The Tewaaraton Award nominee ranks 14th in the NCAA in points per game (4.5) and 17th in points (72) and has set career highs in goals (40), assists (32), points, caused turnovers (3), goals in a game (six against James Madison) and assists in a game (five vs. Duquesne). The Eldersburg, Md., native also registered her 100th career point in a 9-8 victory against Drexel March 22.
One of the team's offensive leaders, Cyr is one of two Nittany Lions (McCormick) who has registered at least 10 goals and assists. The Westminster, Md., native ranks second on the squad in points (50) and assists (24) and is third in goals (26). The attacker has netted a team-leading four game-winning goals and produced a team-best 22 game point-scoring streak that spanned two seasons. Cyr, who has recorded 70 career assists, has ascended the program's record books in 2013 as she ranks seventh on Penn State's all-time list.
A four-time ALC Rookie of the Week, Mosketti has excelled for Penn State at both ends of the field. The Fallston, Md., native ranks sixth in the conference with 27 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers and ranks third on the team in draw controls, fourth in goals (22) and fifth in assists (5).
The Nittany Lions (11-5) will begin postseason play Thursday, May 2 when they face sixth-seeded Vanderbilt in the ALC quarterfinals. Opening draw at Johns Hopkins' Homewood Field is set at 6:30 p.m.
