UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Sophomore attacker Maggie McCormick (Eldersburg, Md.) garnered her second All-America laurel of the season after being named to the WomensLax.com All-America team, the organization announced Friday.
The Eldersburg, Md., native helped lead the Nittany Lions (14-7, 4-1 ALC) to their second straight NCAA quarterfinal appearance and the program's most wins since the 1999 season. Penn State, which captured a share of its first ALC regular-season championship, also made back-to-back NCAA tournaments for the first time since a three-year span from 1995-97 and defeated its highest ranked opponent since 2007 with an upset victory against then-No. 2 Florida.
In 2013, McCormick ranks eighth in the NCAA with a team-leading 87 points, while her squad-best 37 assists rank 18th in the nation. The sophomore, who paced Penn State with 50 goals, recorded the most points by a Nittany Lion since Tami Worley collected 94 points during the Nittany Lions' 1989 national championship season. In addition to setting career highs in all offensive categories, McCormick added 12 ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls.
An IWLCA Second-Team All-American, McCormick led or tied for the team lead in points in 15 games this season. The Tewaaraton Award nominee notched her 100th career point in a 9-8 victory against Drexel March 22 and also set single-game highs in goals (6) and assists (5) in games against James Madison and Duquesne, respectively. McCormick, who earned All-ALC first-team accolades, notched a season-best eight points in a 13-12 victory against James Madison and recorded at least four points in 12 games.
In all, 25 student-athletes representing 14 universities earned WomensLax.com All-America honors.
