BARENDRECHT, The Netherlands - Penn State men's basketball cruised to a 95-53 victory over Binnenland on Thursday night at De Driesprong to cap its European tour 2-1. D.J. Newbill (Philadelphia, Pa.) returned from illness to pace the Nittany Lion offense with 24 points.
Binnenland started the game with a 9-5 lead then Newbill (Philadelphia, Pa.) took over. He drove through the lane and made the layup and got fouled. Although he missed the ensuing his next drive drew another foul and he made the next two free throws to knot the score. Newbill missed the entire second half Tuesday at St Jan because of a stomach ailment.
After a Binnenland turnover, Allen Roberts (Middletown, Pa.) canned a left-winged three-pointer for a 12-9 lead. The Nittany Lions forced another turnover and Frazier tallied a layup to increase the margin to 14-9. Following a Binnenland bucket, Brandon Taylor (Tabernacle, N.J.) drained a three-pointer for a 17-11 advantage.
The Nittany Lions would continue to extend the lead with a Ross Travis (Chaska, Minn.) dunk and a Graham Woodward (Edina, Minn.) as Penn State led 28-15 after 10 minutes. Travis scored 12 in another strong performance overseas.
Taylor would add two more threes as Penn State continued to roll in the second quarter. He would be PSU's leading scorer early on with his three treys. Taylor's night ended with 11 points in all.
Payton Banks (Orange, Calif.) added five of his own on a three-pointer to make the score 40-19 and a layup a little while later. Banks finished the game with 15 points, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter.
Geno Thorpe (Pittsburgh, Pa.) got into the act by crossing over his defender for an athletic dunk before adding a pair of free throws for a 27-point lead. Penn State led 50-26 after two quarters. Thorpe collected seven points.
The Nittany Lions were slowed early in the third quarter, only scoring six points in the first seven minutes. Nevertheless, Penn State exploded for 13 in the final three minutes as Newbill scored nine points in the frame and Penn State led 69-41 after 30 minutes.
Newbill continued to pace Penn State on the ledger scoring seven of the first nine points to open a 33-point lead, 78-45 with seven minutes remaining. Newbill added nine in the fourth quarter to finish his 24-point evening.
Tim Frazier (Houston, Texas) scored on a layup in the first quarter and rested the entire second half. Frazier made his nine-month return from an Achilles tendon injury to score 26 points on Tuesday at St Jan and tallied 10 points on Monday in a win over Okapi Aalstar juniors.
Penn State's stingy defense held Binnenland to 15 or less points in every quarter and no Binnenland player tallied double figures. Every Nittany Lion played with all but two scoring.
