Ceresko Captures Second PA State Amateur Golf Championship Title

Aug 16, 2013

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Rising junior Ellen Ceresko became the first women's golfer in Penn State program history to win back-to-back titles at the Pennsylvania State Amateur Golf Championship.

"It was a great win and I really can't believe I'm bringing the trophy back for the second time - it hasn't really sunk in yet," Ceresko said.

On the third and final day of competition at the Gulph Mills Country Club in King of Prussia, Pa., Ceresko secured a victory after a 5-up win against Jackie Rogowicz of Yardley, Pa. Earlier in the week, she defeated Madelein Herr in the opening round of the tournament, before her performance in 20 holes moved her ahead of Allison Weaver. Ceresko then defeated Aurora Kan, 2 and 1 to advance to the final round of play, before capturing her second straight title in the event.

"I knew that Ellen (Ceresko) was playing against an exceptional opponent from the start and she was going to have to play pretty flawless golf to make it happen - and she did," head coach Denise St. Pierre said. "This is a very difficult course in regards to shot placement and green reading and she really managed it well and with great maturity."

With her second straight triumph in the event, Ceresko is now the only Penn State women's golfer to achieve consecutive wins at the PA State Amateur Golf Championship.

"I think it speaks to the quality of the individual players we have on the team and it's certainly a proud moment for me and something to be respected," St. Pierre said.
