Penn State Readies for No. 2 Maryland in Preseason Exhibition Tuesday

Aug 19, 2013

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Three days removed from a 1-0 exhibition defeat of the University of Nebraska-Omaha, the Penn State men's soccer team is set to welcome No. 2 Maryland to Jeffrey Field Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. for its second exhibition of the season.

The match marks the first home game of the season for the Nittany Lions, who notched a 7-2-2 record at Jeffrey Field in 2012. Fans are reminded that there is a no bag policy on stadium grounds.

Penn State opened preseason play Saturday night in Omaha with a 1-0 victory against an upstart Nebraska-Omaha squad. The lone goal was scored on a volley by senior Martin Seiler (Stuttgart, Germany) in the 13th minute after receiving a corner kick from Omaha native Grant Warming (Omaha, Neb.).

"I felt like we defended [Nebraska-Omaha] well," Warming said. "We've been working a lot on defending and attacking set pieces and we were lucky to get [a goal] on a corner and then defend about eight or so corners effectively."

Junior Andrew Wolverton (Snellville, Ga.) made four saves in the 90-minute effort, as the Nittany Lion backline earned the clean sheet.

The Lions now turn their attention to Maryland, who is ranked second in the nation according to the NSCAA preseason poll. This is the first exhibition of the season for the 2012 national semifinalist Terrapins.

Penn State and Maryland played to a 2-2 draw in a preseason exhibition last season in College Park, Md. The Nittany Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Julian Cardona and current senior Mikey Minutillo (San Jose, Calif.), before the Terps roared back with a pair of goals in the final 15 minutes.

Maryland is led by 2012 MAC Hermann Trophy winner Patrick Mullins, and returns seven starters.
