UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State Nittany Lions open the 2013-14 season tonight against the Army Black Knights inside Pegula Ice Arena.
This is the second straight season the two teams will square off, with the 2012 meeting ending in Penn State's favor, 5-0. Head Coach Guy Gadowsky enters his second season at the helm of the Nittany Lions. He led the squad to a 13-14-0 record in 2012-13, his first season.
In last October's matchup, the Nittany Lions had five players tally a goal against the Black Knights; including a three point performance (1g, 2a) from sophomore forward Casey Bailey. It was one of Bailey's seven multi-point efforts in 2012-13.
Peter Sweetland, Jonathan Milley, Kenny Brooks and David Glen also had goals for the Nittany Lions in the win.
In 2012-13, the Nittany Lions averaged 2.7 goals per game. Look for that to improve as they recruited several talented offensive weapons and are returning players with a year of Division I hockey under their belt. Coach Gadowsky stressed the importance of having depth this season to keep fresh legs on the ice and keep the tempo of the game fast.
The Black Knights enter a new season after a tough 2012-13. The team ended the year with a 7-22-5 record and had just one player score more than 10 goals. As a team, they averaged 2.1 goals per game while allowing 3.6 goals per game.
This will be the first opportunity for Hockey Valley to watch their team take on a Division I opponent in Penn State's new arena, Pegula Ice Arena. The puck drops at 8 p.m.
