UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The largest crowd to see a Penn State women's hockey game saw a hard-fought contest that went the way of the Union Dutchwomen, 2-1, on Friday night at Pegula Ice Arena in front of 1,424 fans.

Union (3-3-0) scored on a pair of power plays to earn their first win in four games, while Penn State (1-3-1) found the net on a Shannon Yoxheimer (Jackson, Mich.) rocket in the second period.

Union struck first when sophomore Courtney Turner notched her third goal of the season on the power play 14:48 into the opening period. Penn State controlled most of the play early on in the period but the Dutchwomen quickly gained momentum when the Nittany Lions' Laura Bowman (Minnetonka, Minn.) went to the box for body checking and the game's first power play. Turner put Union ahead just 14 seconds into the advantage, tipping in a shot from the top of the zone by Maddy Norton. It was Norton's third assist of the season.

Penn State fought back in the second period, out-shooting the Dutchwomen 11-7 for the frame. Yoxheimer received a feed from Taylor Gross (Colorado Springs, Colo.) and sniped a top-shelf rocket to knot the score at one. Gross's assist was her third of the year.

In the third period, the back-and-forth action tipped to Union when Stefanie Thomson scored the game-winning goal on an Ashley Johnston feed. The Dutchwomen had two power plays and both shots found the back of the net.

Penn State's Nicole Paniccia (Oakville, Ont.) made 24 saves, while her counterpart Shenae Lundberg stopped 23 Nittany Lion efforts. Shots on goal were led by Union, 26-24. Penn State went 0-for-3 on the power play.

The Nittany Lions and Dutchwomen rematch tomorrow at Pegula Ice Arena for a 2 p.m. opening faceoff. PSU is looking to break a streak of three one-goal losses to Union.
