NEW HAVEN, Conn. -
Penn State came away with three victories during the first day of competition at the Bulldog Invitational on the campus of Yale. The Nittany Lions won two matches in singles and took the first match of doubles to close out the day.
The day began with singles matches against the Dartmouth Big Green. Katherine Yao knocked off Jacqueline Zuhse (Boca Raton, Fla.) winning a second set tiebreaker to take the win at the No. 1 position, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3). In the next match Jacqueline Crawford defeated Chelsea Utting (Peachtree City, Ga.) after Utting retired in the second set down 6-4, 1-0 in the match.
The Nittany Lions picked up the victory in the No. 3 and No. 4 positions. Samantha Tutelman (New York, N.Y.) topped Melissa Matsuoka 6-4, 6-3 and Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) bested Suzy Tan in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2. The wins are both Bedard and Tutelman's fifth of the fall to lead the team.
Julienne Keong Si Ying topped Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) in their singles match winning 6-1, 6-3. In the final singles match of the day Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) fell to Sarah Bessen, 6-4, 6-0.
Following a short break Penn State moved into doubles play where they squared off against Boston College. The Nittany Lions took the flight's top match with Utting and Zuhse defeating Jessica Wacnik and Lexi Borr, 8-6.
Whiteaway and Sandor teamed up to take on Wan-Yi Sweeting and Katya Vasilyev following the Cissie Leary Invitational where both Nittany Lions found great success in doubles play. The Penn State duo was unable to come away with the victory on the afternoon however, falling to the Eagles pair 8-5. Bedard and Tutelman faced Heini Salonen and Emily Safron but were bested 8-4 to end the first day's action.
The Nittany Lions will face Boston College again tomorrow morning when the teams compete in singles matches. Following the morning session Penn State will meet Brown in doubles competition in the afternoon.
