2013 NSCAA Scholar All-America Teams
KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Penn State women's soccer seniors Maya Hayes (West Orange, N.J.) and Taylor Schram (Canonsburg, Pa.) have been named NSCAA first team Scholar All-Americans, the NSCAA announced on Wednesday afternoon. Hayes and Schram are the first Nittany Lions to earn first team honors since Katie Schoepfer in 2009 and the first PSU duo on the first team since Heidi Drummond and Joanna Lohman in 2003.
In order to be selected for the team, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale throughout her career as well as start more than 50 percent of a team's games, while being a junior or a senior.
Hayes, an NSCAA second team All-America honoree and first team All-Big Ten selection, earns the honor after turning in a cumulative grade point average of 3.39 in kinesiology. The senior started all 23 games for the Lions in 2013 and led the squad in scoring with 19 goals while also adding six assists for a total of 44 points. She finished out her career with the Blue and White at No. 3 on the all-time career goals and points lists, registering 71 goals and 163 points in four seasons. Hayes leads all active Division I players in goals and is second in assists.
Additionally, Hayes was a M.A.C. Hermann Trophy semifinalist and the first Senior CLASS Award finalist in program history. She is currently training at a week-long camp with the U.S. U-23 team in Sunrise, Fla.
Schram earns the honor after posting a 3.40 cumulative GPA in psychology. She registered five goals and eight assists for the Blue and White in 2013 en route to earning NSCAA first team All-Great Lakes accolades and second team All-Big Ten laurels. The senior started all 23 matches for the Lions, logging over 1,700 minutes in the midfield. For her career, Schram notched 24 goals and finished just outside of Penn State's all-time assists ledger with 24 assists.
Hayes and Schram join the likes of Schoepfer, Aubrey Aden-Buie (2007), Erin McLeod (2005), Drummond and Lohman (2002-03), Christie Welsh (2002) and Emily Oleksiuk (2001) on the all-time Nittany Lion list of NSCAA Scholar Athlete first team selections.
The duo will be honored at the NSCAA All-America Luncheon as a part of the NSCAA Convention on Jan. 18, 2014 in Philadelphia.
