Jan. 14, 2014

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State's Trevor Howard (Columbus, Ohio) has been selected as the Big Ten Gymnast of the Week, as announced by the conference. Howard, who earned his second career Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honor, is the first Nittany Lions to receive league recognition in 2014. In 2013, Howard earned a record-setting nine Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, while also picking up one Gymnast of the Week award.

Howard played a key role in Penn State's season-opening victory (431.900-410.300) against No. 15 Army. The sophomore captured four individual event titles on the way to a first-place finish in the all-around. He opened the night with a 15.050 score in the floor exercise before securing top finishes on the still rings (15.450), vault (15.00) and parallel bars (15.100). Howard also swung to a 14.350 score on the high bar.

Howard and the rest of the No. 5 Penn State men's gymnastics team will head north this weekend to compete in the West Point Open, hosted by Army. The Nittany Lions open the weekend with the team finals Friday, Jan. 17th at 7 p.m., before concluding with the individual finals Saturday, Jan. 18 at 7 p.m.
