WACO, Texas - The No. 49 Nittany Lions (3-1, 0-0) were unable to upset the No. 19 Baylor Bears (6-0, 0-0) Saturday night falling, 7-0.
The Nittany Lions were able to even the doubles competition at one point a piece before Baylor took the final seven matches en route to their shutout win. Baylor started off quickly with their top pair and the nation's 37th-ranked duo of Blair Shankle and Victoria Kisialeva knocking off Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) and Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia), winning 6-2.
Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) and Dasha Sapogova (Belarus, Minsk) continued their winning ways taking the No. 2 doubles match 6-3, over Jordaan Sanford and Alex Clay tying the doubles competition at one. The win moved the duo to 3-0 together on the season.
Baylor clinched the doubles point when Kiah Generett and Alex Leatu topped Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) and Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.) in the No. 3 doubles match 6-2. It was the first match of the season the Nittany Lions didn't take the doubles point.
In singles play Baylor continued its roll winning all six minutes. Shankle put the Bears up 2-0 in the match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Bedard. The No. 3 singles match was the next to finish when Sanford topped Sapogova, 6-2, 6-0.
Alex Leatu clinched the win for Baylor with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Shukow in the No. 6 match. No. 38 Kiah Generette increased Baylor's lead to five when she bested Blik, 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match. Sandor put up a fight in the second set but ultimately fell to Kisialeva 6-1, 6-4.
Whiteaway started strong in her match taking the first set 6-3. After Makenzie Craft of Baylor fought back taking the second set 6-3, the final match went to a super breaker with Craft coming out on top, taking the tiebreaker by a score of 11-9.
The Nittany Lions will look to bounce back next weekend when they return home to face the No. 42 Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday at 10 a.m.
