Freshmen Ricky DeRosa (Aston, Pa.) and Dylan Richard (Sherwood Park, Alta.) helped the Penn State men's hockey team to a 2-1 second-period lead, but Michigan State netted a late third-period goal as the teams skated to a 2-2 draw at Pegula Ice Arena Friday night.

After a scoreless overtime, the game went to a shootout with the Spartans (8-13-7, 2-5-6-4 Big Ten) earning the extra league point with the seventh-round victory. Although falling in the skills competition, Penn State (5-18-2, 1-9-1-0 Big Ten) collected a conference point in its second straight game.

Sophomore forward Casey Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska/3g, 1a), who assisted on Richard's power-play goal, extended his point-scoring streak to four games, while DeRosa (2g, 2a), redshirt junior Taylor Holstrom (Yorba Linda, Calif./3a) and redshirt sophomore Eric Scheid (Blaine, Minn./1g, 3a) each registered a point in their third straight games.

Michigan State, which went 0-for-6 on the power play, out shot the Nittany Lions by a 34-27 margin. Penn State converted on 1-of-5 power-play opportunities, while sophomore goaltender Matthew Skoff (McKees Rocks, Pa.) turned aside 32 shots for the second straight game. Michigan State netminder Jake Hildebrand made 25 stops.

Penn State and Michigan State will conclude their series Saturday, Feb. 15 at 3:30 p.m. The game will air live on ESPNews, WatchESPN, GoPSUsports.com and WRSC 103.1.

In the second period, Michigan State opened the scoring with 16 minutes left in the frame. After Greg Wolfe blocked a shot in the Spartan's defensive zone, Lee Reimer gathered the loose puck in the neutral zone before scoring stick side.

Penn State responded with a pair of strikes in a 1:05 span to take a 2-1 advantage. DeRosa put the Nittany Lions on the board after taking Scheid's drop pass in the slot and wristing the puck high glove. Freshman David Thompson (Glen Mills, Pa.) also collected an assist on the play.

With 10:29 left, Richard netted a power-play goal as the Nittany Lions grabbed the lead. Bailey's shot from the point was redirected by Holstrom to the side of the net, where Richard netted his third marker of the season.

The Spartans tied the game at 16:06 of regulation. Skoff turned aside Matt Berry's initial attempt, but Michael Ferrantino netted the rebound.
