ANN ARBOR, Mich. - After sophomore Casey Bailey (Anchorage, Alaska) tied the game with five seconds left in regulation, freshman David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) completed the comeback as his overtime game-winner lifted the Penn State men's hockey team to a 5-4 victory against No. 10/10 Michigan at Yost Ice Arena Friday night.
The Nittany Lions, who improved to 6-19-2 overall and 2-10-1-0 in the Big Ten, exploded for five goals against a Michigan (14-10-3, 6-6-1-1 Big Ten) defense that entered the game averaging fewer than two goals against per game at home. Penn State, which defeated the Wolverines Feb. 8 for its first conference win, sent Michigan to its fourth straight loss with its first conference road victory.
The Nittany Lions erased a 3-1 deficit after the first period to tie game with Bailey's power-play goal in the second and Dylan Richard's (Sherwood Park, Alta.) shorthanded breakaway less than five minutes into the third. After Michigan secured the go-ahead tally with 2:02 left in regulation, Bailey's second marker tied the game as Matthew Skoff (McKees Rocks, Pa.), who made 32 saves, was pulled for an extra skater.
With less than a minute to play in the extra frame, Goodwin and linemate Zach Saar (Richland, Mich.) entered the offensive zone on a two-on-one before Goodwin wired a shot high blocker.
Bailey, who netted his first two-goal game since Dec. 29, 2012, finished the game with six points in his last six games. Goodwin scored the first two-goal game of his career, while Richard added an assist for his second multi-point game of the year.
Penn State, which out shot the Wolverines by a 44-36 margin, went 1-for-4 on the power play, while Michigan finished 1-for-5 with the man advantage. Michigan netminder Zach Nagelvoort made 39 saves.
Goodiwn netted his sixth marker of the year in the first period, but Michigan scored three goals in the opening 20 minutes for the 3-1 lead. With 14:20 left in the frame, Boo Nieves gave the Wolverines the 1-0 advantage after Derek DeBlois gathered a turnover behind the Penn State and fed an open Nieves in the slot.
While on the power play, Phil Di Giuseppe doubled the Michigan advantage. The Wolverines entered their offensive zone on an odd-man rush before Di Giuseppe, who rang his first attempt off the right post, scored on the rebound.
A Des Peres, Mo., native, Goodwin responded just 25 second later to halve the deficit. Sophomore Kenny Brooks' (Las Vegas, Nev.) shot was steered into the corner, where forward Taylor Holstrom (Yorba Linda, Calif.) sent a pass toward the front of the net. Goodwin, who was crashing the slot, beat Nagelvoort through the five hole.
The Wolverines retook the two-goal advantage with 4:23 left in the frame. Andrew Copp skated down the right-wing boards before finding Tyler Motte with a cross-crease pass for the goal.
With time winding down in the second, Bailey's sixth goal of the year lit the lamp with 35 seconds left in the frame. While on the power play, Richard's pass found Bailey at the top of the left circle for a one-timer that went off the post and into the net.
Penn State tied the game with a shorthanded strike 3:17 into the third period. Junior Tommy Olczyk (Long Grove, Ill.) chipped the puck past the Michigan defense to Ricahrd in the neutral zone, where he skated in on a breakaway before moving the puck to his backhand and roofing Penn State's conference-leading fifth shorthanded marker of the year.
Alex Guptill broke the 3-3 tie for the Wolverines with 2:02 left in the third period. JT Compher moved the puck to Guptill in the slot, where he wristed a shot low to the glove side.
With time winding down, Bailey's wrister through traffic found the back of the net before Goodwin's heroics sent the Nittany Lions to the historic victory.
