ROSEMONT, Ill. - After a three-point weekend, which included an overtime game-winner against then-No. 10 Michigan, freshman forward David Goodwin (Des Peres, Mo.) of the Penn State men's hockey team has been named the Big Ten Third Star of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
The Des Peres, Mo., native opened his weekend against the Wolverines with his first two-goal game Friday, Feb. 21. Goodwin put Penn State on the board early in the first period before netting the game-winning marker as the Nittany Lions earned their first conference road victory in a 5-4 overtime upset at Yost Ice Arena.
The forward, who ranks fifth among conference freshman with 0.58 points per game, followed his heroic performance with an assist on Taylor Holstrom's (Yorba Linda, Calif.) tally the following night. Although Penn State fell in the series finale, 5-2, the Nittany Lions earned a season split with the Wolverines at 2-2-0.
During the weekend, Goodwin led the Big Ten in faceoff winning percentage (.875) and tied for first in game-winning goals (1), third in goals and fourth in points. The rookie, who joined sophomore Matthew Skoff (McKees Rocks, Pa.) as Penn State honorees this season, shared weekly honors with Wisconsin's Michael Mersch (first star) and Joel Rumpel (second star).
The Nittany Lions will return to action this weekend when they face off against No. 2/2 Minnesota Feb. 28-March 1 in their final road trip of the regular season. Friday night's game will air live on BTN at 9 p.m., while puck drop Saturday is set for 7 p.m. on NBC Sports Network.
