Richmond Edges Penn State in Stroke Play Match

March 1, 2014

MIDLOTHIAN, Va. - The Penn State men's golf team fell to the University of Richmond 510 to 519 in a one-day, stroke play match up.

Penn State played all nine athletes on its roster and counted the top seven best scores to the team's overall total. Freshman Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) led the way for the Nittany Lions, posting a match-low score of 69. Senior Shane Stewart (Dublin, Ohio) and junior Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) weren't far behind, both tallying 70's for the Blue and White.

Sophomore JD Dornes (Lancaster, Pa.) shot a 72 on the day while sophomore Chris Houston (Gilford, N.H.) and junior Xander McDonald-Smith marked a 77 and 79, respectively.

Freshman Cody Cox (Milford, Pa.) and junior Ryan Worthy (Chester Springs, Pa.) notched 82's for Penn State. Rounding out the Lions' 9-man lineup was sophomore Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.), who posted an 84.

"Richmond played very consistent today from top to bottom," head coach Greg Nye said. "We had some great scores out of Christian [Elliott], Jens [Talbert], JD [Dornes], and Shane [Stewart], but we struggled to put up three more we needed to win."

Penn State will resume its spring slate when the team travels to Tallahassee, Fla. for the Seminole Intercollegiate March 14-16.
