EAST LANSING, Mich. - Penn State fell to the Michigan State Spartans on the road Friday afternoon dropping two of the three in doubles play and all six singles matches. Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) and Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.) earned the Nittany Lions sole win with an 8-4 victory in No. 3 doubles.
The Nittany Lions fell behind after Michigan State took two of three matches in doubles. Marina Bohrer and Erin Faulkner topped Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) and Dasha Sapogova (Minsk, Belarus) at No. 1, 8-3.
Blik and Shukow quickly responded to tie the doubles competition at one match a piece with an 8-4 victory over Athena Trouillot and Catherine Parenteau in the No. 3 match.
Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) and Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) battled back to tie their match at No. 2 after trailing early but Michigan State held on. With the match tied 7-7, the Spartans pairing of Julianne Gruber and Emily Meyers were able to get the final game to clinch the doubles point for Michigan State heading into singles play.
The Spartans took a 2-0 lead when Parenteau bested Sandor in the No. 3 singles match, 6-2, 6-0. After squeezing past Bedard in the first set 7-5, Meyers put Michigan State up 3-0 in the match with a 6-1 second set.
Marina Bohrer added to the Spartans lead with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Sapogova in the No. 1 match. After forcing a third set against Whiteaway, Trouillot was able to pick up the victory when Whiteaway retired in the third set while trailing 2-1.
Olga Chernova earned the Spartans next point with a win at No. 5. After dropping the first set to Shukow 7-5, Chernova was able to win the second set and force a super breaker where she earned the victory.
After falling to Faulkner in the first set 7-5, Blik came back to win the second set 6-4 and force a third set. In the final set Faulkner was able to fend off a late run by Blik and take the set 6-4, securing the win and giving the Spartans a 7-0 victory.
