HARRISONBURG, Va. -
Three Nittany Lions - junior Jess Loizeaux (Mullica Hill, N.J.), classmate Kelly Lechner (Silver Spring, Md.) and sophomore Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.) - netted two goals each, but the ninth-ranked Penn State women's lacrosse team fell to No. RV/20 James Madison, 11-10, at University Park Wednesday evening.
The Nittany Lions (2-3, 0-0 ALC), who held a 7-5 halftime advantage, took a 10-9 lead with freshman Abby Smucker's (Bel Air, Md.) seventh marker of the season with 6:41 left to play, but James Madison's (4-1, 0-0 CAA) Stephanie Finley netted the game's final two goals - the final coming on a man-up, free-position shot - with 46 seconds remaining en route to the one-goal victory.
Senior Mackenzie Cyr (Westminster, Md.) notched a team-high three points (1g, 2a), while junior Tatum Coffey (Toms River, N.J.) and sophomore Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.) added a goal and an assist each. Lechner registered a game-high four draw controls, and goalkeeper Cat Rainone (Newtown Square, Pa.), who corralled a team-high four ground balls, made eight saves.
Penn State out shot the Dukes by a 23-22 margin and held advantages both in draw controls (12-11) and ground balls (20-18). The Nittany Lions converted 3-of-6 free-position shots and were 12-of-13 on clears, while James Madison went 3-for-5 and 15-for-19, respectively.
The Nittany Lions opened the game on a 4-0 run. Madison Cyr scored just 59 seconds into the contest before Loizeaux netted a free-position goal with 27:33 left in the first half. Coffey and Mosketti then tallied markers, the later coming with 25:56 remaining, before James Madison scored three straight, including two from Finley, to make it a one-goal game.
Lechner tallied twice in a 12-second span to extend the Penn State lead to 6-3 before the Dukes finished the stanza on a 2-1 run. Emily Rhoads netted one for James Madison with 10:52 remaining before Mosketti made it a 7-4 game. Amy Roguski closed out the scoring in the first half, cutting the Nittany Lion lead to 7-5.
In the second half, James Madison erupted with a 4-1 run as it took its first lead of the game. After James Madison made it 7-6 in favor of the Nittany Lions, Loizeaux pushed the Penn State lead to two with 24 minutes left in the game. The Dukes then tallied three straight, the final with 12:32 remaining, as they grabbed the 9-8 lead.
Mackenzie Cyr, who scored on the free position, and Smucker tallied back-to-back goals for the Nittany Lions as Penn State took a 10-9 lead, but James Madison ended the game with two straight markers. Finley scored with 3:33 left in the game before netting the game-winner with 46 seconds remaining.
The Nittany Lions will return to action Saturday, March 8 when they host No. 12/12 Loyola at the Penn State Lacrosse Field. Opening draw is set at 1 p.m.
