UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; April 5, 2014 - The Birmingham Jefferson Civic Center was buzzing with energy for the second semifinal session of the NCAA Championships and the No. 15 Penn State women's gymnastics team closed out their season with a sixth place finish in the evening session with a score of 194.825.
The Nittany Lions capped one of the best seasons in school history by finishing 12th overall at the NCAA Championships. As the No. 15 team in the country, the Blue and White became the first team outside of the top-12 to ever advance to the NCAA Championships.
They compiled the first 20-win regular season, finishing 20-3 overall, placed second at the NCAA University Park Regional with a NCAA postseason school record score of 196.725 and advanced to the program's first NCAA Championship since 2009 and 17th overall in school history.
Penn State enjoyed success at the national summit, scoring among the top-five in program history in three NCAA Championship events. The team score of 194.825 also ranks fourth in program history.
The Lions tied for their highest NCAA Championships score on the floor exercise (49.175), equaling the 2000 team which posted an identical score during the second semifinal in Boise, Idaho. Their 48.925 on the vault ranks second and the 48.650 on the uneven bars is fifth in the school's NCAA Championship record books.
After starting the meet on a bye, the Nittany Lions took center stage on the floor exercise and started the meet off on the right foot by tying the highest floor exercise score in the program's NCAA Championship history. Senior Lindsay Musgrove (League City, Texas) and junior Krystal Welsh (Bowie, Md.) led the way for the Blue and White with scores of 9.850 on the final two routines of the rotation to finish tied for 23rd in the semifinal.
Emma Sibson (Allen, Texas) and Sidney Sanabria-Robles (Caguas, Puerto Rico) each notched 9.825 scores on the vault to lead the team. Those marks tied for 21st on the event in the evening session of the championships.
Welsh topped the team on the balance beam with a leadoff score of 9.800 to cap her evening with an all-around score of 39.150. The junior also boasted scores of 9.800 on the vault and 9.700 on the uneven bars to go along with her floor score. Sanabria-Robles tied Welsh for team-high honors in the all-around at 39.150. She used the 9.825 on the vault, 9.750 on the uneven bars, 9.750 on the balance beam and 9.825 on the floor exercise to account for her total.
Sanabria-Robles and senior Kassidy Stauder (Palmerton, Pa.) tied for team-high on the uneven bars at 9.750. Stauder led or tied for the team on the uneven bars in all 14 of the team's meets.
