Nittany Lions Fall on the Road Against Iowa in Regular Season Finale, 6-1

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Penn State women's tennis (6-17, 2-9 Big Ten) fell to the Iowa Hawkeyes (10-12, 3-8 Big Ten) Sunday afternoon at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex Sunday in their regular season finale, 6-1.

The Hawkeyes took the first lead of the match winning two matches in doubles. Ruth Seaborne and Ellen Silver defeated Marie-Frederique Bedard (Montreal, Canada) and Taylor Shukow (Boca Raton, Fla.) at number three doubles, 8-4, to give Iowa the early advantage in doubles.

Annette Dohanics and Morven McCulloch topped Carmen Sandor (Toronto, Canada) and Katherine Whiteaway (Sawbridgeworth, England) 8-4 at No. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point and put the Hawkeyes up 1-0 in the match.

The match at number one singles went unfinished with Katia Blik (Moscow, Russia) and Dasha Sapogova (Minsk, Belarus) leading 6-5 when the doubles point was clinched at court 2.

The Hawkeyes added to their lead when Aimee Tarun knocked off Lisa Petruzillo (Muttontown, N.Y.) at the sixth singles spot, 6-1, 6-0 to put them up by two. Blik earned her seventh win of the season and got the Nittany Lions within a point when she knocked off Talcott in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.

Katie Zordani put the Hawkeyes back in front by two when she topped Shukow 6-0, 6-4 at number four singles. Sapogova dropped the early set at the No. 1 match but came back in the second, leading for much of the set. Ruth Seaborne, ranked No. 75 in the nation, went on a late run and was able to spoil the comeback effort knocking off the Nittany Lions freshman, 6-2, 7-5, to clinch the victory for Iowa.

In her only match on the day, Whiteaway retired from action in the second set when she was trailing, 6-1, 4-3 in the match. The win for Dohanics put the Hawkeyes up 5-1 in the match.

Sandor and McCulloch rounded out the match with both splitting the first two sets each taking a set by the score of 7-5. In the superbreaker third set McCulloch was able to secure the win 10-7 giving Iowa the 6-1 victory.

The Nittany Lions will head to Evanston, Illinois where they will begin play in the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday. First round matches are slated to start at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. CST.
