FRENCH LICK, Ind.- As the first round of the Big Ten Championships came to a close, Penn State sits in fourth place with two rounds left. The Nittany Lions posted a first round 306, equaling 18 strokes over par. The blue and white are just one stroke from third place and five strokes from the leader. Round two takes place Saturday with tee times beginning at 9:00 a.m. Conditions were tough as the teams had to deal with rain in the morning coupled with wind gusts that reached 35 mph.
Senior Christina Vosters (Bethany Beach, Del.) and junior Katlyn Elliott (Peterborough, Ont.) both recorded opening round scores of 75, equaling three strokes over par. Both golfers are tied for fifth. Junior Elyse Archambault (St-Jean-sur-Rich, Que.) is tied for 12th after her opening round 76. Junior Ellen Ceresko (Jefferson Township, Pa.) opened the tournament with an 80, placing her in a tie for 41st.
"I am very pleased with the conditions today. Anything could have happened," said head coach Denise St. Pierre. "They really played hard and managed the course very well. We are all are looking forward to another day tomorrow."
After one round of play, Ohio State leads the tournament after opening up with a 301. The Buckeyes hold a one-stroke lead over second place Nebraska. Cassidy Stelzmiller of Nebraska is in first after posting an even par 72.
