UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - A trio of Nittany Lion women's lacrosse student-athletes earned Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association All-West Region honors, the organization announced Monday afternoon.
Sophomore midfielder Madison Cyr (Westminster, Md.) and senior defender Lauren Purvis (Maple Glen, Pa.) garnered IWLCA All-West Region First Team honors for the first time in their careers, while sophomore midfielder Jenna Mosketti (Fallston, Md.) earned second-time laurels for the second straight season.
A Westminster, Maryland, native, Cyr enjoyed a breakout sophomore campaign as she paced the squad with a career-high 41 goals, while tying for the team lead in points (48). The All-American Lacrosse Conference First Team member, who ranked fifth in the league in goals and ninth in points, placed second on the team in caused turnovers (21) and third in draw controls (33) and tied for fifth in ground balls (20).
One of three Nittany Lions - along with Mosketti - with double-digit totals in caused turnovers, draw controls and ground balls, Cyr set numerous career highs thought the season. In addition to achieving personal bests with season highs in goals, points, caused turnovers and draw controls, the midfielder generated single-game highs in points (6), goals (5), ground balls (5) and caused turnovers (4).
The ALC Defensive Player of the Year, Purvis helped anchor the Nittany Lion defense with a conference-leading 1.61 caused turnovers per game. The defensive stalwart, who became the Nittany Lions' fourth major award winner at the conference level, secured 29 caused turnovers, 27 ground balls and eight draw controls.
An All-ALC First-Team selection, the Maple Glen native earned at least three caused turnovers in five games this season, including a career-high five caused turnovers in a 21-8 Nittany Lion victory against Drexel March 26.
A midfielder, Mosketti ranked second in the conference with a team-high 74 caused turnovers. The Fallston, Maryland, native, who earned All-ALC Second Team honors, paced the squad in ground balls (28), while ranking second in goals (30), third in caused turnovers (19) and tying for fifth in points (35).
Since head coach Missy Doherty's first season in 2011, 15 Nittany Lions have earned IWLCA All-Region honors. In 2014, the fourth-year coach led the Nittany Lions to their 20th NCAA tournament and their third straight appearance since a three-year span from 1995-97. Penn State finished the campaign at 10-8, marking the program's fifth straight 10-win season.
