UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; May 9, 2014 - The Penn State Nittany Lions (17-27, 5-13 Big Ten) were defeated by No. 19/9 Indiana (33-12, 17-2 Big Ten) by a final score of 10-0. The Hoosiers jumped out to an early 6-0 lead through the first four innings and never looked back en route to the 10-run victory.
Penn State's J.J. White (Landsowne, Va.) was the lone bright spot for the Nittany Lions, posting a 3-for-4 evening at the dish with a double and two singles. The three hits mark a season high for the junior and match his career high which came on May 13, 2012 against Illinois.
Indiana's powerful offense was on display early, as the Hoosiers were the first team to get on the scoreboard with a run in the top of the first. Kyle Schwarber hit a one-out triple to the gap in right center and then came around to score off a single from Scott Donley to give the visitors a one-run lead.
Two innings later Indiana produced a big four-run inning to open up a 5-0 lead. The Hoosiers used four base hits, including a double and triple, along with a walk, a Penn State error and three steals to extend their lead to five runs
Indiana's Sam Travis added to its lead in the fourth frame, hitting a two-out solo home run over the wall in left center, his eighth homer of the season and the first one at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park this season to give the visitors a 6-0 advantage.
The Hoosiers' starting pitcher Joey DeNato held the Penn State hitters in check over his six innings of work. The senior allowed no runs on four hits and a walk while striking out three hitters before being relieved by Thomas Belcher.
Penn State allowed the visitors to tack on four more runs in the ninth and Indiana went on to win by a final of 10-0 to win its 12th game in its last 13 contests.
Penn State and Indiana return to the diamond tomorrow for the second game of the series. Saturday's game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
