Former Lady Lion Alex Bentley Named WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week

UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. - Former Penn State Lady Lion Alex Bentley was selected as the WNBA's Eastern Conference Player of the Week for the week of June 9-15. The second-year pro averaged 19.3 points and 3.7 assists to lead the Connecticut Sun to a 3-0 week and a four-game winning streak overall. She shot 61.1% (22-36) from the field and was 4-for-5 from beyond the arc.

Bentley, who garnered WNBA All-Rookie team accolades with the Atlanta Dream a year ago, opened her her week with a career-high 22 points with five assists and four rebounds in a 96-95 win over Phoenix on Thursday. She was 9-for-12 from the field, including a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range.

The next night, Bentley again surpassed her career mark with 24 points in the Sun's 83-75 win over the Liberty in Madison Square Garden. Bentley scored 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting as the Liberty tried to rally from a 16-point deficit. She hit a three-pointer with 1:02 left and two free throws with 37 seconds remaining to seal the win for Connecticut. It was the first road win for the Sun since August 3, 2013.

Bentley closed out her week with 12 points and four assists in a rematch with New York. Bentley also dished out four assists in the 76-72 win over the Liberty on Sunday.

The native of Indianapolis is second on the team in scoring at an 11.2 scoring mark and leads the Sun in assists. Her 3.3 assists per game are seventh in the Eastern Conference. She is second on the team in field goal percentage (.478) and first in three-pointer percentage (.458), which is also fourth in the Eastern Conference.

As a rookie in 2013, Bentley averaged 8.3 points, 2.8 assists and 1.0 steals per game. She ranked third in the league in assists per turnover (2.4), 18th in total assists (95) and 19th in three-point field goal percentage (.329). Among rookies, Bentley ranked fourth in scoring and third in steals and assists. Earlier last season, she broke the WNBA record for consecutive three-pointers made with 10.
