KAMLOOPS, British Columbia, Canada - Day one of the 2014 North America, Central America and Caribbean (NACAC) U-23 Championships is in the books and Brittney Howell (Wyncote, Pa.) leads the heptathlon competition with her score of 3,362 points.
With interim head coach John Gondak at the helm of the United States men's distance runners, the U.S. claimed two first-place finishes Friday.
Howell started the heptathlon competition with a time of 13.81 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. She tied for first in the event and tallied 1,005 points. In the high jump, she posted a height of 5 feet, 7 1/4 inches to finish second. With her height of 5-7 1/4, Howell gained 867 points. Howell placed fourth in the shot put with her mark of 37-10. She picked up 630 points in the shot put event. In the final event of the day, the 200-meter dash, Howell scored 860 points with her time of 25.29. Her time of 25.29 was the second-fastest.
With the first four events completed, Howell has a score of 3,362 points. She is currently in first-place and leads by four points over fellow U.S. teammate Quintunya Chapman.
The heptathlon competition concludes tomorrow starting at 4:10 p.m. (EDT) with the long jump event. The javelin throw takes place at 5:30 p.m. (EDT) and the final event of the heptathlon, the 800-meter run, is slated for a start time of 6:30 p.m. (EDT)
The U.S. men's distance team found success Friday under Coach Gondak. The U.S. claimed the top two spots in the men's 10,000-meter run (Christopher Bendtsen, 31:43.37 and Christopher Enriquez, 31:47.77). The U.S. claimed gold in the men's 1,500-meter run as Matthew Hillenbrand won the race with his time of 3:54.85.
