UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - In a hard-fought Big Ten opener, the No. 6 Penn State field hockey team dropped a 3-2 overtime contest to No. 18 Michigan at the Field Hockey Complex. Sophomore Emilee Ehret (Philadelphia, Pa.) posted a career-high three points, tallying a goal and an assist in the contest.
"I give Michigan credit," said head coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss. "They came back being down 2-0. It's just really unfortunate for us to start overtime down a person. We had chances. The last two minutes we were right there. Their goalie came up with some saves and we just couldn't connect on a couple of those corner opportunities. We got some shots, but just couldn't put one in."
Prior the game, there was a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new turf field. At halftime, the Nittany Lions held their 50 Years of Women in Sport celebration, recognizing former Penn State field hockey players.
Penn State moved to 5-2, 0-1 Big Ten, while Michigan improved to 5-2, 1-0 Big Ten. The Nittany Lions led the Wolverines in corners, holding a 9-6 advantage.
Penn State got on the board first early in the opening half. On their first penalty corner attempt of the day, Ehret directly inserted to senior Taylor Herold (Fredericksburg, Va.), who fired a shot into the corner of the cage with 30:26 to go in the first period.
With 13:30 on the clock, senior Jenna Chrismer (Mountain Top, Pa.) put a shot on goal. After it was saved by Michigan goalkeeper Sam Swenson, Ehret tapped in the rebound and put Penn State up 2-0. The Nittany Lion defense allowed five shots but held the Wolverines scoreless in the half.
The Wolverines answered to start the second half. Off a penalty corner, Michigan got a shot and a rebound. Carly Bennett collected the rebound and scored with 31:07 remaining in regulation, making the score 2-1.
Bennett scored again on a breakaway with 14:15 to go, knotting the score at 2-2.
The teams alternated penalty corners late. With no time on the clock, the Wolverines received their final corner of regulation. Michigan put a shot on goal, but a diving save by redshirt senior Kylie Licata (Mountain Top, Pa.) sent the game to overtime.
Penn State, down a player to start the overtime period after being issued a yellow card near the end of regulation, surrendered the sudden victory game-winning goal to Michigan's Ainsley McCallister with 10:48 on the clock.
The Nittany Lions are back in action on Tuesday, Sept. 23, hosting Lock Haven at 7 p.m.
