STORRS, Conn. - In a hard-fought match, the No. 8 Penn State field hockey team dropped a 1-0 overtime contest to No. 3 Connecticut in Storrs, Conn., Saturday. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Kylie Licata (Mountain Top, Pa.) made a career-high 14 saves.

"I'm so proud of the competitive effort of this team," said head coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss. "We had tremendous leadership from our seniors. Kylie was phenomenal and really shut them down."

The Nittany Lions moved to 2-1 on the season, while the Huskies improved to 2-0. Senior Taylor Herold (Fredericksburg, Va.) led Penn State offensively, creating chances and putting seven shots on goal. Licata's previous personal-best in saves was nine in the season opener against Old Dominion (Aug. 29) this season.

Neither team was able to capitalize in the first half, as the squads went into the break with the game scoreless. The Nittany Lions were outshot, 12-4, in the opening period, but six saves by Licata kept the Huskies off the board. Penn State received first-half scoring opportunities from Herold, who put all three of her shots on goal, but wasn't able to find the back of the cage.

After not earning a penalty corner in the opening half, Penn State received four in the second half, but wasn't able to capitalize on the chances. Licata was again impressive in the cage, stopping eight shots in the period, including two in a row on a Connecticut breakaway with just over 15 minutes to go in regulation.

In sudden death overtime, the Huskies earned six shots and five penalty corners. Connecticut's Sophie Bowden found the back of the cage 9:27 into the period off a penalty corner opportunity to secure the win.

Penn State is back in action tomorrow, taking on Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., at noon.
