UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa.; Oct. 11, 2014 - The No. 6 Penn State women's soccer team suffered its first Big Ten loss of the season on Saturday, falling to No. 20 Rutgers, 1-0.

Rutgers' (10-1-1, 6-1-1 Big Ten) game-winning goal came in the 28th minute. Madison Tiernan sprinted down the middle and fired the ball into upper right hand corner for the 1-0 score. The goal marked one of two shots on frame allowed by Penn State's defense.

The Nittany Lions (12-2-0, 7-1-0 Big Ten) returned from halftime with renewed vigor and outshot the Scarlet Knights 6-0 in the final 10 minutes.

Mallory Weber (Novi, Mich.) sparked the rally, sending the ball careening off the crossbar. Thirty seconds later, Mallory Peterson (Clinton Corners, N.Y.) nearly knotted the score but Casey Murphy made the save.

Penn State elevated its offensive attack with three minutes remaining in full time.Three corner kicks and as many shots were recorded, including a Megan Schafer (Langhorne, Pa.) shot on goal at the 89:33 mark. But the Blue and White were unable to crack the Scarlet Knights' backline for the final 1-0 loss.

The Nittany Lions will travel to Michigan on Thurs., Oct. 16, where they will face the Wolverines at 7 p.m.
