Ann Arbor, Michigan; Oct. 16, 2014 - Megan Schafer (Langhorne, Pennsylvania) scored the only goal the No. 11 Penn State women's soccer team needed to best No. 24 Michigan, helping the Nittany Lions to a 1-0 win over the Wolverines on Thursday.
The win gives Penn State (13-2, 8-1 Big Ten) sole possession of first place in the Big Ten standings.
In the 26th minute, Emily Hurd (Sammamish, Washington) sent a cross from the left to Mallory Weber (Novi, Michigan), who laid it off to Schafer in the box. She then fired a shot from 14 yards out of the nearside post for the 1-0 game-winning goal.
The goal was one of three shots Schafer put on frame, a team-best performance in her first career full time showing.
Britt Eckerstrom (Germantown, Maryland) made nine saves for her sixth clean sheet of the year, improving her record to 13-2-0. She now has a 0.57 goals against average on the season.
The Nittany Lions head to Michigan State on Sunday for a 1 p.m. match against the Spartans.
