BEALLSVILLE, Md. - The Penn State men's golf team placed tied-for-sixth overall in a 12-team field at the Georgetown Intercollegiate Tuesday, posting a 589 (294-295) two-round tally at the Members Club at Four Streams.
Senior Jens Talbert (Little Rock, Ark.) shot a 69, matching his season-low, in the final round to move up 17 places on the leaderboard and solidify a top-10 finish. Talbert's 143 earned him a tied-for-7th ranking.
Junior JD Dornes' (Lancaster, Pa.) 147 strokes were good enough to place him tied for 18th, while sophomore Christian Elliott (Port Perry, Ontario) notched a 149 through 36 holes. Elliott finished tied for 27th.
Freshman Cole Miller (New Tripoli, Pa.) trailed Elliott by one stroke, shooting a 150 two-round total. Sophomore Cody Cox (Milford, Pa.) rounded out the scoring for the Nittany Lion starters with 152 strokes.
Junior Geoff Vartelas (Cromwell, Conn.) matched Dornes' on the links, also posting a 147 as an individual.
Toledo maintained control of the lead through the final round, winning the 2014 Georgetown Intercollegiate by a 14-stroke margin over Seattle. It was Cole Berman of host school Georgetown that earned the first place crown in a playoff against William & Mary's Alex Hicks, though. Berman and Hicks fired a pair of 140s to top the field.
The Georgetown Intercollegiate marks the end of the fall season for Penn State. The Nittany Lions will return to the 2013-14 slate when they compete in Big Ten Match Play Feb. 14-15 in Palm Coast, Fla.
