Penn State Intercollegiate Athletics is pleased to team with the Best Man Tim Campaign in an effort to promote awareness of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). The Best Man Tim Campaign is named in honor of Tim Shaw, former Penn State football player who announced earlier this year he was diagnosed with ALS.
Shaw and the Best Man Tim Campaign are working to create increased public awareness of ALS and ongoing support of research leading to the treatment and ultimate cure of the disease.
Shaw was a linebacker at Penn State from 2002-06, taking a redshirt season in 2003. While at Penn State he earned four letters and was an Academic All-American in 2006. Tim graduated with a degree in Management in 2006 and was drafted by the Carolina Panthers. Tim spent time with Carolina, the Jacksonville Jaguars, Chicago Bears and the Tennessee Titans, retiring from football in 2013. Along with longtime friend and former soccer student athlete, Paul Omekanda, Tim is supporting ALS research through the Best Man Tim campaign.
"The Penn State family is one that passionately supports one another through all life stages," said Penn State director of athletics, Sandy Barbour. "ALS is simply a horrible opponent, but together we will support our brother Tim and the fight against ALS with the same tenacity we do everything. Together we can make a difference in this fight and raise the awareness necessary to continue advancements in research and treatment. As One Team we can and will continue to move the needle."
"I will always consider Penn State home. It feels great to have family support me in the fight," Shaw commented.
Shaw and his efforts will be recognized during Saturday's football game vs. Ohio State in Beaver Stadium.
