UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - Penn State's top goal scorer came through in a big way for the Nittany Lions, as Amy Petersen (Minnetonka, Minnesota) netted a pair en route to a 2-1 win over Princeton on Sunday.
The women's hockey team is now 3-2-2 for the best winning percentage in program history (.571) and is in the midst of its longest unbeaten streak at four games.
Against the Tigers (0-1-0), the Nittany Lions got all of the scoring they needed in the first period. Just under five minutes in, Fiona McKenna was called for tripping, yielding Penn State's first powerplay of the night. Thirty seconds into the advantage, Bella Sutton (Shoreview, Minnesota) passed the puck along the blueline to Kelly Seward (Williamsville, New York), whose slapshot sailed to the front of the net. Petersen then knocked in the rebound for the 1-0 score.
With time winding down in the opening frame, the Blue and White continued to press, drawing a second penalty and putting five shots on net. With just 1:49 left in the period, however, Penn State was able to break through. From the farside corner, Hannah Hoenshell (Plano, Texas) flicked the puck to Petersen in front of the net, who caught the goalie out of position and slid in the 2-0 gamewinner.
Celine Whitlinger (Garden Grove, California) was solid in net, making 29 saves. But Princeton spoiled her bid for a shutout just under 13 minutes into the third period. Kelsey Koelzer threw the puck at the net and Cristin Shanahan knocked in the rebound for the final 2-1 score.
Penn State and Princeton face off again Mon., Oct. 27 at 4 p.m. in Pegula Ice Arena.
